America Is Sinking
"We're looking at the sinking of all of North America." - Dr. Heibert
release year: 2023
genre: disaster action
viewing setting: home streaming 5/26/26
synopsis: Some sort of solar radiation disturbs the earth's magnetic field, causing a big glacier to break free and...put the entire United States in danger of flooding in 48 hours.
impressions: This was Asylum cheese, which means insanely inaccurate science, lots of CGI, and scenes shot in ways that save money (and don't ever show the entire situation.) An example of the last: some people might be in a helicopter that's going down into a hole in the earth...but all you'll see is a long shot of the hole from outside, and a close shot of the cabin interior showing those people...but never a complete shot of the people in the helicopter in the big hole. This is how you make a movie that's supposed to have epic scope when you don't have an epic budget. Other things of note: the viewer being reminded every so often that, if the problem isn't somehow solved, America will sink...people fleeing a monstrous tidal wave in a car and always being okay...most of the high-level government operations being coordinated from tiny offices with a few people in them. It was all nonsense, but entertaining on some level.
acting: Johnny Pacar and Lindsey Marie Wilson are the two main scientists who have to figure something out or else America will sink. Michael Pare is the top general who can bring the latest in weaponry and equipment to bear in the effort to keep America from sinking. Lisa Cole is some sort of Presidential advisor whose job it is to get approval for the plans that may keep America from sinking. Asylum staple Paul Logan is an officer who turns the general's orders into action (and never smiles) in the constant effort to keep America from sinking.
final word: They did their best to keep America from sinking, but this is still a low-budget disaster movie. Worth seeing once for fun.
