Megalodon: The Frenzy

"There could be an entire ecosystem down there...and we just unleashed it."    - Dr. Clark

release year: 2023
genre: giant shark drama/action
viewing setting: home streaming 8/20/25

synopsis: The giant sharks are back, and the five of them menace Navy ships as well as a research station.

impressions: This was the third in a recent series from Asylum Entertainment. As with the previous two, it was somewhat entertaining but was challenged by its limited budget and (moreso in this case) some inferior script-writing. Some notable things: this was a true sequel with ties to the previous films...the ship, which was basically wrecked last time, is suddenly operational again...the Navy ship is manned by Marines...Eric Roberts just randomly appeared to take command...the same small, dark, cramped bridge as last time...a shark jumps up at the ship just to get one victim...a "laser fusion drill" that somehow creates an energy link between an underwater volcano and the research station...once again the entire U.S. Navy is unwilling/unable to help..."Fort Bragg, California"...one shark swallows an entire cruise ship!...a big feast scene at Puerto Vallarta...wide-ranging shark attacks (Puerto Vallarta, California, Hawaii)...a shark beaching itself to grab victims...a shark intentionally hitting/disabling the ship's engines...sudden and massive incompetence...more bad overacting...one shark randomly gave birth during a chase scene...Eric Roberts doing nothing but hanging onto a cable during the entire battle with the sharks...the non-armed detonator suddenly becoming functional for no reason.

acting: Caroline Williams is the main scientist, but her voice sounds haggard and she also sounds/looks worried or amazed at all times; the often-bad lines she has to speak don't help. Jeffrey Daniels is an engineer/problem-fixer who's pretty useful. Eric Roberts is the new captain of the ship, and overacts as usual.

final word: Worth seeing - barely - for giant shark cheese.
