Fresh Off the Boat, season 3 (23 episodes)

release year: 2016-17
genre: comedy/drama
viewing setting: home streaming 9/1-7/25)

synopsis: This comedy/drama series recreates the adventures of a Chinese family who move to Florida to start a restaurant and are constantly balancing their own heritage/behavior and that of the country they live and work in.

impressions: The third season's focus remained on the entire family, not just Eddie. There was a lot more with the grandmother this season too, as well as various schoolmates and neighbors. The quirks of the family's mother - who's so driven by success and frugality that sometimes she missed the point of life - seem to dominate.

acting: Same ensemble cast. Constance Wu is the mother, who's obsessed with success, perfection, and spending as little money as possible. Randall Park is her husband, who's now dealing with three sons who are getting older and maturing. Hudson Yang is the oldest, who's clever but a slacker. Forrest Wheeler is the middle, who grew a LOT since the last season. Ian Chen is the youngest, who's somewhat of a prodigy. Lucille Soong is the grandmother, who speaks in Chinese and is always up to something. Chelsey Criso and Ray Wise are the most friendly of the neighbors.

final word: Fun and easy to watch for doses of realistic humor.
